Local Group gathers over 3000 signatures Against Utility Tax

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (02/11/15) – On Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, the Muhlenberg County Board of Education passed a vote to add a 3% utility tax to local citizens due to financial issues with the local school system. Many local citizens were not pleased to hear that the tax vote was passed.

Shortly thereafter, KenCo News interviewed Jarrod Douglas, one of the committee members of a group of Muhlenberg County residents that not only spoke out against the tax, but made the choice to actively oppose it (CLICK HERE TO SEE VIDEO INTERVIEW).

On Jan. 27, the committee met with Gaylan Spurlin to instigate the process of putting a stop to the tax. After that day, the committee began gathering local citizens and issuing petitions to be signed by those who opposed the tax.

According to Mr. Douglas, at this point there are over 3000 signatures. These numbers have not been made official by Mr. Spurlin’s office yet, but once they are, the next step will be a meeting by the Board of Education.

KenCo News will keep you updated on the details as they occur.
