Fatal Accident on Pennyrile Parkway

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky.  (02/12/2015) – On February 11, 2015, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office investigated a three vehicle collision that occurred on the Edward Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway. The collision took place at approximately the 32 mile marker northbound, and resulted in a single fatality.

The investigation revealed that Donald R Hatfield, 41, of Richland, Indiana, was operating a 2000 International semi northbound, when a coyote crossed into the travel portion of the roadway from the median. The animal went under the vehicle and struck a 2001 BMW, being operated by James Hatfield, 18, of Richland, Indiana. Donald Hatfield activated his hazard lights, slowed and attempted to pull into the emergency lane. Ryan Thomas McNeely, 39, of White Plains, Kentucky, was traveling northbound in a 2008 Mercury and attempted to avoid the animal that had been struck. McNeely was crossing from the left lane to the right lane, and failed to see the semi slowing in the right lane. McNeely struck the rear of the semi trailer.

Ryan T McNeely suffered fatal injuries from the collision, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hopkins County Coroner. The next of kin was notified by the coroner’s office.

Donald Hatfield and James Hatfield did not suffer any injuries in the collision.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Kentucky State Police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Medical Center Ambulance Service, and South Hopkins Fire Department.
