Burglar Hides in Snow in Attempt to Escape Police Officer

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky.  (02/20/2015) – On Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, the Madisonville Police Department released information regarding an overnight burglary attempt that resulted in an arrest.

Police officials state that for three weeks a string of burglaries have been underway at Madisonville’s newest Chinese restaurant, RI YU Palace, located on Park Avenue. Since Jan. 31, 2014, RI YU Palace has been burglarized three times. Last night, the burglar was caught in the act of breaking into the restaurant for the fourth time in a row.

At 12:01 AM, Officer Ron Latham noticed a suspicious subject in the area as he was on patrol. As he watched the man, named Amplies William Slaton III, AKA Amp Slaton, he observed him attempting to make entry into the restaurant. Once Officer Latham attempted to confront Slaton, the suspect fled the scene on foot. A chase followed for several city blocks before Slaton went into a nearby wooded area. Slaton hid under some brush and snow. Officer Latham apprehended Slaton.

Video footage obtained during the previous investigations verified that Slaton was involved in all the previous burglaries. Slaton has a history of burglarizing local businesses.

Slaton was charged with three counts of Burglary 3rd Degree, One Count of Burglary 3rd (Attempted), Fleeing/Evading Police and Alcohol Intoxication in a public place.

Slaton was lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center.

Officer Latham was assisted on the scene by Officer Kyle Pharris.
