TRAFFIC ALERT – KYTC Crews Pre-Treating Highways Today

WESTERN Ky. (02/26/2015) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has announced a traffic advisory for counties throughout the region.

KYTC officials have provided information stating that Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews across the 11 counties of District 2 plan to pre-treat area highways today.

Motorists should be alert for spray trucks and support vehicles on the road starting around 8:00 a.m., CST.

Spraying brine on road surfaces leaves a fine powder of salt that is available to be activated by falling precipitation in the early hours of a winter weather event helping to improve driving conditions. It also keeps snow and ice from bonding to pavement surfaces making it easier to plow off once it accumulates.

The pre-treating is in anticipation of a round of winter precipitation expected tonight. It takes about two full days to pre-treat all 3300 miles of highway in the district. Crews will only have time to treat about half of that today.

Motorists should carefully monitor area news media and the National Weather Service for updates on this approaching precipitation.
