Muhlenberg County Legendary Actor James Best Passes Away 

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (04/07/15) – Local citizens are saddened to hear that on Monday, April 6, 2015, Muhlenberg County native and famed actor James Best passed away.

Best was born on July 26, 1926 in Powderly. He was 88 years old on the day of his passing.

Best has starred in many highly popular television shows and movies. The role that made his career, however, was that as Roscoe P. Coltrane in “The Dukes of Hazzard.”He also starred twice in the popular NBC western show, “Frontier.”

James Best was a name he took on later in life. Originally, Best was born under the name of Jules Guy. Best left Muhlenberg County at three-years-old after the death of his mother when he was placed in an orphanage. Eventually he was adopted by Armen and Essa Best from Harrison County Indiana.

After his career in the movies and on television, Best returned to Muhlenberg County several times to sign autographs for local citizens.

Best also served as a soldier in the United States Air Force.

Sources state that the cause of Best’s passing was complications from Pneumonia.

Best was a devout Christian, not afraid to state his beliefs and faith in God.

“James was truly a good man. I had the opportunity to speak with him and meet up with James on several occasions. He always had good things to say about Muhlenberg County and our citizens. This is a major loss for us, but heaven has been blessed with a good Christian man. James, you will never be forgotten by your friends, family and fellow citizens of Muhlenberg County.”
