Crofton Woman Runs into State Trooper Car during Traffic Accident Investigation

KENTUCKY  (05/13/2015) – The Kentucky State Police is investigating an injury collision, involving three vehicles, that occurred on the Edward T. Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway, northbound, at approximately the 40 mile-marker, on Wednesday, May 13, at 9:49 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that William Ward, 44, Clarksville, TN, was operating a 2014 Dodge Caravan northbound on the parkway when the vehicle struck a deer that had entered the travel portion of the roadway. Mr. Ward’s vehicle came to rest partially in the median, off the left shoulder of the roadway. KSP Sergeant Dean Patterson stopped behind Mr. Ward’s vehicle to render aid to the occupants.

Karen Orten, 46, Crofton, KY, was operating a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on the parkway. As she approached the other vehicles, she lost control. The passenger side of her vehicle struck the rear of Sergeant Patterson’s unmarked, police cruiser, a 2011 Ford Taurus. The impact forced the Taurus into the Caravan.

Sergeant Patterson was able to exit his vehicle prior to impact and was not injured. Mr. Ward and his passengers, William Lewis, 22, Savannah, TN, and David Miget, 33, Dyer, TN, had already exited the vehicle prior to the impact and were not injured.

Ms. Orten was not injured. Her passenger, Irvin Dulin, 73, Crofton, KY, was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. Mr. Dulin was transported via ambulance to Baptist Health Madisonville. He was later flown to St. Mary’s in Evansville, IN for treatment.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Sergeant Nick Rice is conducting the collision investigation. Several Post 2 units, Medical Center Ambulance Service, the Madisonville Fire Department, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet assisted at the scene.
