Car Thief Flees from Kentucky State Police

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (9/10/2014) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) has reported an incident that occurred today, Sept. 10, 2014, involving a stolen vehicle and drugs.

According to KSP Post 2, Troopers received a call in reference to an abandoned vehicle located at a residence on Hanson Road in Madisonville Kentucky. The caller stated that a blue BMW convertible had been abandoned on his property. Kentucky State Police CVE units along with KSP post 2 units responded to the residence to investigate.

A check of the BMW’s vehicle identification number revealed that the BMW was stolen out of Evansville Indiana. While on scene, 39 year old William Metheny of Madisonville arrived to pick up the vehicle. KSP units questioned Metheny and were able to determine Metheny was responsible for the theft of the vehicle.

Metheny was placed under arrest at the scene without incident, a search of the subject yielded methamphetamine along with other drug paraphernalia.

While affecting the arrest, Metheny stated debris from the ground had irritated his eye. Metheny requested medical treatment for the injury. KSP units transported Mr. Metheny to Baptist Hospital Emergency room in Madisonville Kentucky for treatment. Emergency room doctors determined Mr. Metheny's injuries to be minor. Metheny was treated and released in a short amount of time.

As KSP units transported Mr. Metheny from the emergency room to their cruisers, Mr. Metheny was able to break free from custody and flee north from the hospital parking lot toward the CSX train tracks. Officers were unable to locate Metheny directly after the escape.

A short time later, Metheny was located in a trailer park near the hospital. He was arrested and lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center.
