South Carrollton Home Destroyed by Fire

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (12/13/2014) – On Saturday, Dec. 13, at around 4:00 PM, the Central City and Bremen Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene of a reported fire in the South Carrollton area, just off of 431 North, on the bank of the Green River.

When KenCo News reporters arrived on the scene, firefighters were in the process of extinguishing the fire of a house trailer. Kentucky State Police Trooper Jon McGehee informed reporters that no one was in the residence at the time of the fire.

After a short investigation, Central City Fire Chief Rick King tracked the source of the fire to a nearby burn barrel. The burn barrel was cool to the touch, but the trail of burnt leaves and ground debris showed that the fire had traveled from the barrel to the far southern end of the trailer and returned to the area beneath the trailer. Chief King stated that sometimes burning debris can exit the barrel and smolder in the leaves for an extended time, and then reignite. Chief King stated that though this is not the absolute source of the fire at the time, it was highly likely.

The home appeared to be destroyed by the fire.

The Central City Fire Department was assisted on the scene by Kentucky State Police, the Bremen Fire Department, EMS and Kentucky Utilities.
